Prendiville Brings Students Together
Kylie Barker and Nathan Hill both attended Prendiville Catholic College from 1986 to 1990. Back then the school was just starting and resources were limited but this didn't stop either of them from becoming successful in their chosen careers.
After Kylie graduated from Year 12, she headed straight to Curtin University and completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy by the end of 1994. Her first position was at the Royal Perth Hospital in 1995 and, although she loved the ability to put her studies into practice, she also felt a need to travel with her newfound career. In 1996 Kylie travelled to New South Wales and then to Victoria, working at various hospitals whilst there. After five years Kylie moved back to Perth and since 2003 has been studying full time to complete her PhD. Kylie admits she is a "sucker for punishment" but she enjoys studying nonetheless.
Her PhD will determine the effect of strengthening the diaphragm in people with emphysema with the aim of reducing breathlessness. Besides her hectic study schedule, Kylie works about four hours a fortnight in the High Dependence Area at Royal Perth Hospital. Her caring, healing and helpful nature is a reflection of her values as well as a very supportive family. This family also includes her husband, Nathan Hill, whom she met whilst at Prendiville.
Nathan and Kylie were high school sweethearts for approximately 12 months and, as Nathan jokingly said, "She couldn't resist me." They then decided to go their separate ways, however their lives were to cross paths again six years later whilst travelling by train.
During those six years Nathan had joined the RAAF as an Avionics Technician. His work is continually challenging as Nathan's studies are on-going. He worked on Hornets in Williamstown for eight years before changing to Air Traffic Controlling. This work led him to Iraq for four months where he is currently in an air traffic tower in Baghdad. His response to the situation there is, as most people would expect - "We all hope to be home soon."
Eighteen months after that chance meeting Kylie and Nathan were married. Both wanted to marry in the Catholic Church as they felt that the values it encourages within couples would enable their relationship to grow and help them to tackle difficult issues before they became issues of contention. These values are still evident in their marriage today as they support each other while being physically separated and they still have the capacity to support and serve those in the wider community; values of which they can be proud.
Reunions
Reunions of year groups have always been a great opportunity for former students to keep in touch with each other.
The reunions are always popular and are generally arranged at five or ten year intervals.
